VW digital service record: how to check it in Ireland
Volkswagen stopped relying on the stamped book years ago. On most modern VWs the service history is a digital record held in Volkswagen's own dealer system against the car's VIN — which is good news if you're buying, because it can be retrieved without the seller's cooperation.
Where the record actually lives
When a franchised Volkswagen dealer services a car, the visit is written into the manufacturer's central system — the Digital Service Schedule — against the vehicle's 17-character VIN. The entry records the date, the odometer reading, the work carried out and which dealership did it.
That has a useful consequence: the record belongs to the car, not to the owner. It doesn't disappear when the service book goes missing, when the car is sold, or when it crosses a border and gets new plates. Digital coverage is strong for cars from roughly 2012 onwards and very consistent from about 2019, when Volkswagen Group moved decisively to the digital service schedule across its European dealer network. Older cars are more likely to return partial records or none at all — in which case you are not charged.

Why this matters in the Irish market
Volkswagen is consistently one of the best-selling brands in Ireland, and the Golf, Polo, Passat and Tiguan are staples of the Irish used market. A large share of them arrived as UK or Northern Irish imports, which is exactly where a VIN-based history check earns its money: the car may be on Irish plates now, but its main-dealer servicing was logged in the UK against the same VIN.

What this report is not
Worth being plain about, because two different products get confused here. This is the maintenance record. It does not include NCT test history, and it does not include finance, write-off, stolen or insurance-claim status — those are separate records held by different bodies, and an Irish vehicle history check from a provider of that data is the right tool for them. Plenty of buyers run both.

The VW was imported from the UK — will it still have a record?
Usually yes, and it's often the fuller record. Service history is held against the VIN, so a car serviced by UK franchised dealers keeps that history after it is imported, VRT is paid and it goes onto Irish plates. The paperwork frequently stays behind with a previous owner; the manufacturer's record doesn't.
Does the report include NCT history?
No. We return manufacturer and main-dealer service records — the maintenance history. NCT roadworthiness test history is a separate record held by the RSA and is not part of this report.
Will independent garage servicing show up?
No. Only work logged by a franchised Volkswagen dealer reaches the manufacturer's system. A car genuinely maintained by a good independent can come back with little or nothing — which is why the check is free unless records are found, and why a thin result is worth asking the seller about rather than treating as proof of neglect.
