How do I check a car's service history in Ireland?

Enter the car's 17-character VIN above. We query the manufacturer's central dealer system — the same one a main dealer sees — and return every digital service entry on file: date, odometer reading, dealership and the work carried out. We do not use the registration, because Ireland has no public lookup that maps a plate to a vehicle record; the VIN is what the manufacturer keys the history to.

Why the VIN and not the registration

In the UK, a service history lookup can start from the number plate because the DVLA publishes a vehicle record against it. Ireland has no equivalent public feed, so an honest Irish check starts from the VIN — the 17-character number the manufacturer actually stores the service record against.

That turns out to be an advantage. A VIN follows the car for life. It survives a change of owner, a change of plate, and the move from a UK registration to an Irish one — which is exactly why an imported car's history is still retrievable years later. See the imported car service history check for how that works in practice.

What the report shows

  • Every service visit logged at a franchised main dealer
  • The date of each visit and the odometer reading in km
  • The dealership that carried out the work, and where
  • A summary of what was done — scheduled service, warranty repair, recall completion, workshop remarks
  • A downloadable PDF you can send to a buyer, a dealer or an insurer

What it does not show

We would rather you know before you pay. The report does not include NCT test history, outstanding finance, write-off or insurance-claim status, or a stolen-vehicle check — those are different records held by different bodies, and an Irish history check from a provider of that data is the right tool for them.

It also does not include work done at independent garages. Only visits logged into the manufacturer's system by a franchised dealer appear. A car with a genuine independent-garage history can come back with little or nothing — which is why your card is not charged when we find no records.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a car's service history in Ireland?

Enter the car's 17-character VIN in the box above. We query the manufacturer's central dealer database and return every service entry franchised dealers have logged against that VIN — date, odometer reading, dealer and work done. The lookup is free; you only pay €12.99 if records are found.

Can I check service history by registration in Ireland?

Not reliably. There is no public Irish feed that maps a registration to a vehicle's manufacturer record, so any check that claims to work from an Irish plate alone is either guessing or returning something other than service history. We ask for the VIN because that is what the record is stored against.

Does the Irish logbook show service history?

No. The Vehicle Registration Certificate confirms registration and ownership details only. Service history is a separate record held in the manufacturer's dealer system, which is why a car can have a clean logbook and completely unknown maintenance history.

Does this include NCT history?

No. We return official manufacturer and main-dealer service records — the maintenance history. The NCT is a separate roadworthiness test held by the RSA and is not part of the report. Anyone offering you an Irish service history that is really just test history is selling you something different.

The car was imported from the UK — does that matter?

It helps. Manufacturer service records are stored against the VIN, not the number plate, so a car built and serviced in the UK keeps its dealer history after it is imported, VRT is paid and it goes onto Irish plates. That history is often the fullest record on the car.

What does a report cost?

€12.99. Your card is authorised at checkout but only charged if we actually find service records for the vehicle. If nothing is on file, the authorisation is released and you pay nothing.

Where do I find the VIN?

The VIN is a 17-character code. It is printed in field E of the Vehicle Registration Certificate (the Irish logbook), stamped at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, and shown on a plate inside the driver's door frame. On a UK import it will also be on the V5C the seller may still hold.

Which cars have records?

Cars serviced at franchised main dealers, where the visit was logged into the manufacturer's central system. Work done at an independent garage is not in the manufacturer's system and will not appear. Digital coverage is strong from roughly 2012 onwards and thins out on older cars.
