How reliable is the Ford Focus? What the evidence shows
We don't give the Focus a reliability score — no public source measures breakdowns, warranty claims or repair costs across every model, so a single number would be invented. This is what we can source for cars built from 2012.

Newer generations have had less time on the road for problems to show, so a short list is not a clean bill of health.
Where these come from: our research is built from manufacturer statements and motoring publications, most of them British. A warranty extension or goodwill scheme described here may have been offered in another country only — ask a dealer here whether it applies to your car.
Focus Mk4 (2018 on)
Acknowledged by the manufacturer
Problems the maker has admitted — through an extended warranty, a compensation scheme, a service action or a statement.

If it has the Ford 2.0 EcoBlue diesel: 2.0 EcoBlue: faulty batch of fuel injectors replaced by Ford
A batch of fuel injectors fitted to 2.0 EcoBlue diesels in 2019 had a coating problem that could block them. Symptoms are rough running, misfires, poor idle, high fuel use and eventually limp-home mode. Ford ran a field service action to replace the injectors free of charge, whether or not they had failed; check the van or car has had the work done.
Applies to: Ford 2.0 EcoBlue diesel built 25 February to 13 September 2019 — mainly Transit, Transit Custom and Ranger, with some Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Edge
Only vehicles built between late February and mid-September 2019; a Ford dealer can check by VIN.

Electrical glitches and warning lights that come on for no reason
Owners report niggling electrical faults on this Focus, especially with the infotainment system and dashboard warning lights appearing without a fault behind them. Car Mechanics links spurious warning lights to a weak 12V battery, so test the battery first; a car left standing should be kept on a trickle charger.
Applies to: Ford Focus Mk4 (2018–2025)
- Reported by 2 publishersGearbox
Automatic gearbox: jerky changes and gear-selection faults
Owners report jerky automatic gearboxes on this Focus, and Car Mechanics notes problems with gear selection and vibration on the dual-clutch automatic. On a test drive the automatic should pull away and change gear smoothly, without shunts or shudder.
Applies to: Ford Focus Mk4 (2018–2025) with an automatic gearbox
The make, model and year can't tell us the gearbox, so this shows for every Focus Mk4 — it only applies to automatics. Car Mechanics describes the automatic as the seven-speed PowerShift dual-clutch; What Car? does not say which automatic its owners had.
- Reported by 3 publishersTiming belt / chain
If it has the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (belt-in-oil): 1.0 EcoBoost: oil-bathed timing belt can break up early
The 1.0 EcoBoost's timing belt runs in engine oil. If servicing has been missed or the wrong oil used, the belt can degrade early and shed debris that blocks the oil pickup, starving the engine of oil pressure. A low oil pressure light, rattling, rough idle or difficult starting are the reported signs; replacing the belt is a big, expensive job. Ford later changed the camshaft drive to a chain.
Applies to: Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (belt-driven camshafts) in the Fiesta, Focus, C-Max, B-Max, EcoSport, Mondeo, Transit/Tourneo Connect and Courier, built 2012–2019
Only the turbocharged 1.0 EcoBoost — Ford also sold non-turbo 1.0 engines of the same size. Cars built around 2018–2019 may have either a belt or a chain; a Ford dealer can tell from the VIN.

If it has the Ford 1.6 TDCi diesel (DV6 / DLD-416): 1.6 TDCi diesel: turbo failures, injector leaks and clogging
The 1.6 TDCi diesel has a reputation for turbo failures, leaking injectors and clogged particulate filters and EGR valves. Listen for tapping from the top of the engine, look for oily deposits around the injectors and watch for heavy smoke under hard acceleration.
Applies to: Ford 1.6 TDCi diesel in the Fiesta, Focus, C-Max, B-Max, Mondeo and Transit/Tourneo Connect, built to 2018

- Compensation scheme · FordCooling
If it has the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (3-cylinder turbo): Coolant hose can fail and overheat the engine
On 1.0 EcoBoost engines built between October 2011 and October 2013, a coolant pipe can fail at high temperature, and the engine can then overheat. Ford reworked affected cars under a field service action and later said it would pay 100% of repairs linked to 1.0 overheating. If the temperature warning comes on, stop and let the engine cool.
Applies to: Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (3-cylinder turbo) in the Focus Mk3, Fiesta Mk7, C-Max / Grand C-Max and B-Max, built 2011–2013
Only if it's the turbocharged 1.0 EcoBoost — Ford also sold a non-turbo 1.0 of the same size.

PowerShift automatic: judder, jerky changes and clutch failure
The PowerShift dual-clutch automatic has a poor reputation on this Focus. Reported faults run from judder when pulling away or stopping to complete clutch failure. Ford specifies a fluid and filter change every three years; check it has been done and that the car changes gear smoothly from rest.
Applies to: Ford Focus Mk3 (2011–2018) with the PowerShift automatic gearbox
The make, model and year can't tell us the gearbox, so this shows for every Focus Mk3 — it only applies to the PowerShift automatic.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.
Recalls aren't listed here. A franchised dealer can tell you from the VIN whether a recall is open on a particular car.
Common questions
Is the Ford Focus reliable?
We don't score reliability: no public source records breakdowns, warranty claims or repair costs across every model, so a single rating would be guesswork. What we hold for Ford Focus cars built from 2012: 2 problems Ford has acknowledged, through a warranty extension, goodwill scheme or service action, and 5 reported by at least two independent publishers — listed above by generation, each with its sources. Which matter depends on the generation and engine, and on whether the work has been done, which a service history check shows.
What are the most common Ford Focus problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: Electrical glitches and warning lights that come on for no reason; Automatic gearbox: jerky changes and gear-selection faults; 1.0 EcoBoost: oil-bathed timing belt can break up early; 1.6 TDCi diesel: turbo failures, injector leaks and clogging; PowerShift automatic: judder, jerky changes and clutch failure. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has Ford acknowledged problems with the Focus?
Yes — 2 problems in our research, for example through a warranty extension, goodwill scheme or service action. Our sources are mostly British and schemes can differ by country, so ask an Irish franchised dealer whether one covers a particular car.
Does every Focus have these problems?
No. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history shows: our check returns the manufacturer's dealer records by VIN, and there's no charge if we find nothing.
Has this car had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car, found by its VIN — what was done, when and at what mileage — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
