How reliable is the Range Rover Evoque? What the evidence shows
We don't give the Evoque a reliability score — no public source measures breakdowns, warranty claims or repair costs across every model, so a single number would be invented. This is what we can source for cars built from 2012.

Newer generations have had less time on the road for problems to show, so a short list is not a clean bill of health.
Where these come from: our research is built from manufacturer statements and motoring publications, most of them British. A warranty extension or goodwill scheme described here may have been offered in another country only — ask a dealer here whether it applies to your car.
Range Rover Evoque Mk2 (L551) (2018 on)
Acknowledged by the manufacturer
Problems the maker has admitted — through an extended warranty, a compensation scheme, a service action or a statement.
None that we hold for this model.
Reported by owners and the motoring press
Problems at least two independent publishers report on this model, that the maker has not acknowledged. They describe the model, not this car — many cars never have them.

Evoque Mk2: electrical glitches and infotainment faults
Electrical and electronic glitches are not unusual on the second-generation Evoque, with many of the infotainment system's features affected. The Pivi system can also suffer from crackling that has proved impossible to cure on some cars. Check everything works and that the latest software is installed.

If it has the 2.0 Ingenium diesel (204DT / AJ200D): 2.0 Ingenium diesel: timing chains stretch and can fail
The 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel used across Land Rover and Jaguar from 2015 has a reputation for its timing chains stretching early. The first sign is usually a metallic rattle on a cold start, sometimes with a reduced-performance warning; left alone, the chain can jump or break and wreck the engine. Specialists link it to fuel-diluted oil from unfinished DPF regenerations and long service intervals, and replace the chains, guides and tensioners together (an expensive repair). There was no recall.
Applies to: 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel (2015 on) in the Evoque, Discovery Sport, Discovery 5, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Defender, Jaguar XE, XF, E-Pace and F-Pace
Applies to the 2.0-litre diesel only, and is reported mostly on earlier engines. The engine size shows as 1,999cc but doesn't tell us the engine family; on these models that capacity is the Ingenium. Many engines with regular oil changes never suffer it.

If it has the 2.0 Ingenium diesel (204DT / AJ200D): 2.0 Ingenium diesel: DPF blockage and fuel diluting the oil
The diesel particulate filter on the 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel struggles to clean itself on cars used for short trips. When a regeneration is cut short, extra fuel washes into the sump and thins the oil, which is blamed for faster timing-chain and turbo wear. Owners see DPF and engine warning lights or reduced power, and the service light can come on early. Longer runs, finishing regenerations and more frequent oil changes are the usual advice; a blocked filter needs a forced regeneration, cleaning or replacement.
Applies to: 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel (2015 on) in the Evoque, Discovery Sport, Discovery 5, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Defender, Jaguar XE, XF, E-Pace and F-Pace
Applies to the 2.0-litre diesel only, and mainly to cars used for short journeys.

If it has the 2.0 Ingenium diesel (204DT / AJ200D): 2.0 Ingenium diesel: early turbocharger failure
Turbochargers on the 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel can fail well before old age. Signs are a whistle that rises with engine speed, smoke, or a sudden loss of power with a reduced-performance warning. Specialists tie many failures to oil problems, including fuel-diluted oil from repeated DPF regenerations, and flush the oil system when fitting a new turbo so it does not fail again.
Applies to: 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel (2015 on), reported on the Jaguar XE and F-Pace and the Range Rover Evoque (both generations) and Velar
Applies to the 2.0-litre diesel only.

Evoque Mk1: electrical faults, air-con and sat-nav
Most problems reported on the first Evoque are electrical rather than mechanical, especially the air-conditioning and the sat-nav and infotainment unit. Faults were usually fixed under warranty but cars could spend a long time at the dealer. Check every electrical feature works on a test drive.

Evoque Mk1: clonks from the suspension over bumps
Some first-generation Evoques clonk from the front or rear suspension over bumps, and there has been no definitive fix. Suspension faults also appear in owner-survey results for this model. Listen for knocks on a test drive over rough roads.
Applies to: Range Rover Evoque Mk1 (2011–2018)
- Reported by 2 publishersGearbox
Evoque Mk1: automatic gearbox faults
Automatic gearbox problems are reported as fairly common on the first Evoque, ranging from software faults to actuator problems and, less often, the gearbox itself. Owners also describe hesitant, jerky changes around town from the nine-speed automatic. Check for smooth shifts on a test drive and ask what software updates have been done.
Applies to: Range Rover Evoque Mk1 (2011–2018) with an automatic gearbox (nine-speed from autumn 2013)
The make, model and year can't tell us the gearbox, so this shows for manual Evoques too; it only applies to the automatic.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.
Recalls aren't listed here. A franchised dealer can tell you from the VIN whether a recall is open on a particular car.
Common questions
Is the Range Rover Evoque reliable?
We don't score reliability: no public source records breakdowns, warranty claims or repair costs across every model, so a single rating would be guesswork. What we hold for Range Rover Evoque cars built from 2012: 0 problems Land Rover has acknowledged, through a warranty extension, goodwill scheme or service action, and 7 reported by at least two independent publishers — listed above by generation, each with its sources. Which matter depends on the generation and engine, and on whether the work has been done, which a service history check shows.
What are the most common Range Rover Evoque problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: Evoque Mk2: electrical glitches and infotainment faults; 2.0 Ingenium diesel: timing chains stretch and can fail; 2.0 Ingenium diesel: DPF blockage and fuel diluting the oil; 2.0 Ingenium diesel: early turbocharger failure; Evoque Mk1: electrical faults, air-con and sat-nav. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has Land Rover acknowledged problems with the Evoque?
We haven't found a warranty extension, goodwill scheme or service action in which Land Rover acknowledged a problem on this model. The reported problems above come from the motoring press.
Does every Evoque have these problems?
No. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history shows: our check returns the manufacturer's dealer records by VIN, and there's no charge if we find nothing.
Has this car had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car, found by its VIN — what was done, when and at what mileage — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
