What a Volvo report can look like

Manufacturers don't all keep the same detail, so reports come in four shapes. We've opened the one you're most likely to get. Every entry below is made up; a real report lists the Volvo's own visits.

Why the entries are short: for some makes the dealer system only passes on recall and warranty work, not routine servicing. Each entry still carries a date, a reading and the Volvo dealer. If those visits fall about a service interval apart, the car was probably serviced while it was there.

Volvo and its dealer records

Volvo is a Swedish manufacturer known for safety and quality. The XC40, XC60, XC90, and V60 are widely sold. Volvo dealerships log workshop activities through their digital systems.

How Volvo's digital service record works

Volvo UK uses the Volvo Cars / Geely group dealer management system (shared with Polestar at the data layer). Workshop remarks held against the VIN include recall completion, warranty repairs, software updates, service-schedule-aligned activity, and (on hybrid / PHEV / electric models) high-voltage battery health checks. Coverage is digital from approximately 2005 onwards, with strongest density from the Mk2 platform refresh (XC60 from 2007, XC90 from 2002 and modernised 2014, V40 from 2012). The Volvo Cars app (formerly On Call) shows recent services for newer cars; the dealer system holds the complete record including pre-app entries and recall work. Records persist across dealer ownership changes because they're held centrally by Volvo UK.

Where to find your Volvo service history

A car's history is usually spread across a few places, and it is worth checking each one.

  • Volvo's dealer system. Every franchised Volvo workshop logs its visits against the car's VIN. A Volvo dealer will usually print them for the owner; anyone else, a buyer included, can use the check on this page.
  • The Volvo owner app, where there is one. Newer cars linked to an owner's account may show recent services there, but only to that account holder.
  • The paper service book. Stamps from dealers and independent garages alike. If it has been lost, a replacement from the manufacturer arrives blank.
  • Independent garage invoices. Work done outside the dealer network only exists on paper, so ask the seller for the folder.

Servicing a Volvo: intervals and models

Volvo service intervals

Volvo services petrol, diesel and hybrid models every 12 months or 29,000 km. Fully electric models run a longer 2 years or 29,000 km. The service reminder adjusts to actual driving conditions.

Intervals vary by engine, model year and schedule type — check the car's own handbook or service plan for the figure that applies to it.

Volvo models we cover

Full UK Volvo range is covered: V40 (M, until 2019), V60 (Mk1 / Mk2 inc. Recharge PHEV), V90 (Mk1 inc. V90 Cross Country), S60 (Mk2 / Mk3 inc. Recharge PHEV), S90 (Mk1), XC40 (X inc. Recharge T5 PHEV and full-electric Recharge / EX40), XC60 (Mk1 / Mk2 inc. Recharge PHEV), XC90 (Mk2 inc. Recharge PHEV, sold 2014 onwards — Mk1 sold 2002-2014 also covered), EX30 (electric, 2023+), EX90 (electric, 2024+), C40 Recharge, plus older S40, V50, C30, C70 (Mk2), S80, XC70. Coverage strongest from 2005 onwards.

Things to watch when buying a used Volvo

Three Volvo-specific things to know: First, the older 5-cylinder petrol and diesel engines (in V70, XC70, S60 Mk2, XC60 Mk1, XC90 Mk1) have specific oil-service interval requirements — verifying dealer entries on annual schedule is reassuring. Second, the modern Drive-E 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines (in 2014+ models) had specific issues with the wet-belt-driven oil pump on certain D4 diesel variants; dealer records showing the belt change at recommended intervals are important. Third, the Recharge PHEV system (XC60, XC90, V60, S60 PHEV) requires annual high-voltage battery health checks to maintain the 8-year battery warranty; entries should appear annually.

Why check Volvo service history before buying

Volvo resale value is sensitive to documented dealer history, particularly because the brand has a strong family / safety reputation and a discriminating buyer base. Workshop-verified service compliance typically adds 8-12% to trade-in over partial-history equivalents. For XC60 and XC90 buyers (the highest-volume Volvos ) dealer history is particularly important. For Recharge PHEV and EX40 / EX30 / C40 / EX90 electric buyers verify the annual high-voltage battery health check appears. For older 5-cylinder engines, oil-service interval discipline in records is the best indicator of long-term reliability.

FAQ

Common questions about Volvo service history

How do I check Volvo service history online?

Type the car's VIN into the form on this page. We ask Volvo's dealer system for every visit logged against that car and show them in date order, usually within a few minutes. It costs €12.99, and the card is only charged if records come back.

How complete is Volvo coverage?

Volvo sits in our Workshop Remarks tier. Entries come from recall and warranty work rather than routine servicing, so they rarely list what was serviced. Visits that fall about a service interval apart still suggest the car was being looked after at the dealer.

Where is a Volvo's service record kept?

Volvo UK uses the Volvo Cars / Geely group dealer management system (shared with Polestar at the data layer).

What will I see on a Volvo report?

For Volvo, mostly workshop remarks: entries made when a franchised Volvo workshop carried out recall or warranty work, each with its date and odometer reading. Routine services are not itemised, but visits that fall about a service interval apart suggest the car was being looked after at the dealer.

Why might a Volvo with a stamped service book show no records?

Usually because the servicing was done at independent garages, which don't write to Volvo's system, or because it was done before the dealer network kept digital records. A book full of independent stamps can be perfectly genuine; it just has to be backed by the paperwork rather than by the dealer system. If we find nothing, your card isn't charged.

Do I need the owner's permission to check a Volvo?

No. The VIN is all we need: no log-in, no ownership documents and no contact with the seller. That's why people use it before they buy, to compare what the seller says with what Volvo's dealers recorded.

How do I tell whether a Volvo was serviced on time?

Put the dates and readings side by side and look at the spacing. Volvo services petrol, diesel and hybrid models every 12 months or 29,000 km. Intervals differ by engine and model year, so the handbook has the exact figure for a given car. A gap much longer than the schedule is worth asking the seller about: it may have been an independent service with an invoice in the folder, or it may have been missed.

Is there a free way to see Volvo service history?

Sometimes, if you are the keeper. A Volvo dealer will often print the history at the service desk if you bring the car's documents, and some Volvo owner apps show recent visits for the car linked to your account. Neither helps a buyer looking at someone else's car, and we know of no public Volvo website that shows the whole record. Our €12.99 check needs only the VIN, and the card is only charged if records are found.

Does Volvo keep digital service records?

Yes. Volvo maintains digital workshop records through the Volvo Cars / Geely group dealer system. Our service returns workshop remarks including recalls, warranty work, software updates and service-related activities.

What data will I receive for a Volvo?

You receive workshop remarks which may include recall notifications, warranty repairs, software updates, and activities aligned with service schedules. Sufficient to verify maintained service pattern and warranty compliance.

What Volvo models are covered?

All UK Volvo models are covered, including V40, V60, V90, S60, S90, XC40 (inc. Recharge electric / EX40), XC60, XC90 (Mk1 / Mk2), EX30, EX90, C40 Recharge, and older V70 / XC70 / S80 / V50 / C30.

Are Recharge PHEV battery checks logged?

Yes. The annual high-voltage battery health check on Volvo Recharge PHEV models (XC60, XC90, V60, S60 PHEV) is recorded as a workshop entry. The 8-year battery warranty depends on this being completed at a Volvo dealer.

Are electric XC40 / C40 / EX30 / EX90 checks logged?

Yes. Battery health checks for the full-electric XC40 Recharge / EX40, C40 Recharge, EX30 and EX90 are recorded as workshop entries. The 8-year battery warranty (with a 70%-of-original-capacity floor) depends on these being completed at a Volvo dealer.

Does the Volvo Cars app show all records?

No. The Volvo Cars app (formerly On Call) shows recent services for supported newer models. Older entries, recall work and warranty repairs typically only appear via a dealer-system lookup.

How does service history affect Volvo resale?

Volvo resale is sensitive to documented dealer history, particularly for XC60 and XC90 family SUVs. Workshop-verified compliance typically adds 8-12% to trade-in value over partial-history equivalents.

How to read a Volvo service history

A list of dealer visits only helps if you know what to look for. Three checks cover most of what goes wrong with a used Volvo's paperwork.

Line the visits up against the schedule

Look at the spacing between visits rather than the number of them. Visits roughly a schedule apart point to a car that was looked after. A long gap is a question for the seller, not a verdict, because the service may well have been done at an independent garage.

Make sure the odometer only goes up

Each visit records the reading on the day. A figure that falls back between one visit and the next is worth questioning before anything else.

Ask about the years the dealer didn't see

Dealer records stop once a car leaves the franchised network. For those years, ask for the invoices from the garage that did the work and check that the dates and readings on them fit with the rest of the history.

How payment works

  1. At checkout your card is authorised for €12.99, not charged.
  2. If we find Volvo dealer records, the payment is taken and the report opens.
  3. If we find none, the authorisation is released. There is nothing to refund, because nothing was taken.

The link to your report keeps working, so you can come back to it or send it to someone else.
