How reliable is the Audi A3? What the evidence shows
We don't give the A3 a reliability score — no public source measures breakdowns, warranty claims or repair costs across every model, so a single number would be invented. This is what we can source for cars built from 2012.

Newer generations have had less time on the road for problems to show, so a short list is not a clean bill of health.
Where these come from: our research is built from manufacturer statements and motoring publications, most of them British. A warranty extension or goodwill scheme described here may have been offered in another country only — ask a dealer here whether it applies to your car.
A3 (Mk4, 8Y) (2020 on)
Acknowledged by the manufacturer
Problems the maker has admitted — through an extended warranty, a compensation scheme, a service action or a statement.
None that we hold for this model.
Reported by owners and the motoring press
Problems at least two independent publishers report on this model, that the maker has not acknowledged. They describe the model, not this car — many cars never have them.

Infotainment and electrical faults
In What Car?'s owner survey the latest A3 had a high fault rate, with most problems concerning the infotainment and other electrical systems, plus engine warning lights. Almost all were fixed free under warranty, but cars often spent more than a week at the dealer.
Applies to: A3 (Mk4, 2020 on); includes S3 and RS3

7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic
The 7-speed DSG automatic with dry clutches, fitted behind the smaller petrol engines, is the DSG variant specialists see most. Owners notice judder or jerking when pulling away and at low speed, harsh or delayed changes, or a flashing gear display and limp mode. Causes are worn clutches, worst in stop-start town driving, or a failing mechatronic control unit; fixes range from a software update or clutch replacement to a mechatronic repair.
Applies to: VW Golf, Polo, T-Roc and T-Cross, Audi A1 and A3, SEAT Ibiza and Leon, Skoda Fabia and Octavia with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200), built from 2012
The make, model and year don't tell us the gearbox. This applies only to cars with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG automatic (DQ200), usually paired with the smaller petrol engines — not manual cars, and not the 6-speed or heavier-duty wet-clutch DSGs.

If it has the VW Group EA888 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrol: 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrols (EA888): high oil consumption
The EA888 1.8 and 2.0 TSI/TFSI turbo petrols have a reputation for using more oil than normal; on earlier engines to about 2013 the cause is usually piston-ring wear, which can bring blue smoke and oily spark plugs. Owners of later GTI, S3 and A4 2.0 TFSI models also report high oil use. Check the level between services, because running low can damage the engine and timing chain; a bad case needs an engine rebuild with revised rings.
Applies to: VW Group EA888 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrol in the Audi A3, S3, A4, A5 and Q5 and VW Golf (incl. GTI)

If it has the VW Group 1.4 TSI / TFSI petrol: Audi A3 1.4 TFSI: rattle from the turbo wastegate actuator rod
Some A3s with the 1.4 TFSI petrol, mostly early cars, develop a rattle from the engine under acceleration. Both What Car? and Auto Express trace it to the rod on the turbo's wastegate actuator vibrating.
Applies to: Audi A3 Mk3 with the 1.4 TFSI petrol, built 2012–2020 (mostly early cars)
Only the 1.4 TFSI turbo petrol; the engine size tells us the capacity, not the engine code.

Pop-up MMI screen creaks or sticks as it rises
The A3's infotainment screen slides up out of the top of the dashboard, and owners of earlier cars report it creaking as it moves. The usual fix is lubricating the mechanism; if that does not cure it the mechanism is replaced. Check it rises and retracts smoothly on a test drive.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.
Recalls aren't listed here. A franchised dealer can tell you from the VIN whether a recall is open on a particular car.
Common questions
Is the Audi A3 reliable?
We don't score reliability: no public source records breakdowns, warranty claims or repair costs across every model, so a single rating would be guesswork. What we hold for Audi A3 cars built from 2012: 0 problems Audi has acknowledged, through a warranty extension, goodwill scheme or service action, and 5 reported by at least two independent publishers — listed above by generation, each with its sources. Which matter depends on the generation and engine, and on whether the work has been done, which a service history check shows.
What are the most common Audi A3 problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: Infotainment and electrical faults; 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic; 1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI petrols (EA888): high oil consumption; Audi A3 1.4 TFSI: rattle from the turbo wastegate actuator rod; Pop-up MMI screen creaks or sticks as it rises. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has Audi acknowledged problems with the A3?
We haven't found a warranty extension, goodwill scheme or service action in which Audi acknowledged a problem on this model. The reported problems above come from the motoring press.
Does every A3 have these problems?
No. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history shows: our check returns the manufacturer's dealer records by VIN, and there's no charge if we find nothing.
Has this car had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car, found by its VIN — what was done, when and at what mileage — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
