How reliable is the Volkswagen Polo? What the evidence shows
We don't give the Polo a reliability score — no public source measures breakdowns, warranty claims or repair costs across every model, so a single number would be invented. This is what we can source for cars built from 2012.

Newer generations have had less time on the road for problems to show, so a short list is not a clean bill of health.
Where these come from: our research is built from manufacturer statements and motoring publications, most of them British. A warranty extension or goodwill scheme described here may have been offered in another country only — ask a dealer here whether it applies to your car.
Polo Mk6 (2017 on)
Acknowledged by the manufacturer
Problems the maker has admitted — through an extended warranty, a compensation scheme, a service action or a statement.
None that we hold for this model.
Reported by owners and the motoring press
Problems at least two independent publishers report on this model, that the maker has not acknowledged. They describe the model, not this car — many cars never have them.

7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic
The 7-speed DSG automatic with dry clutches, fitted behind the smaller petrol engines, is the DSG variant specialists see most. Owners notice judder or jerking when pulling away and at low speed, harsh or delayed changes, or a flashing gear display and limp mode. Causes are worn clutches, worst in stop-start town driving, or a failing mechatronic control unit; fixes range from a software update or clutch replacement to a mechatronic repair.
Applies to: VW Golf, Polo, T-Roc and T-Cross, Audi A1 and A3, SEAT Ibiza and Leon, Skoda Fabia and Octavia with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200), built from 2012
The make, model and year don't tell us the gearbox. This applies only to cars with the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG automatic (DQ200), usually paired with the smaller petrol engines — not manual cars, and not the 6-speed or heavier-duty wet-clutch DSGs.

TDI diesels: blocked DPF and EGR valve on short-trip cars
Diesel versions driven mostly on short trips often don't get hot enough for long enough to burn the soot out of the diesel particulate filter (DPF), and the EGR valve can stick with carbon too. Owners see a DPF warning light, reduced power or limp mode. A long fast drive can clear a filter that isn't too far gone and specialists can clean one; otherwise it needs a new DPF, because a car without a working filter can fail the NCT.

Front brake discs and tyres can wear quickly
Owners have found the Polo's front brake discs wear quickly and can warp, and front tyres can also wear faster than expected. Juddering under braking or a raised lip on the disc edge are the signs.

- Reported by 3 publishersTiming belt / chain
If it has the VW Group EA111 1.2 / 1.4 TSI petrol (timing chain): 1.2 and 1.4 TSI (chain engines): timing chain stretch and rattle
The earlier chain-driven 1.2 and 1.4 TSI/TFSI turbo petrols are known for timing chains that stretch and tensioners that can no longer take up the slack. The sign is a metallic rattle or 'zinging' for a few seconds after a cold start. Left alone, the chain can jump a tooth or break and wreck the engine, so a rattling engine needs a new chain kit promptly.
Applies to: VW Polo, SEAT Ibiza, Audi A1 and Skoda Yeti with the chain-driven 1.2 TSI/TFSI or 1.4 TSI/TFSI turbo petrol (EA111), built up to 2014
Only the turbocharged 1.2 and 1.4 TSI/TFSI chain engines. The non-turbo 1.2 and 1.4 of the same years, and the belt-driven 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 TSI that replaced them around 2014–15, are different engines — the picker only records the capacity, so check which engine the car has.

These describe the model, not one car. Plenty of cars never have the problems their model is known for. Every problem links to its sources; a reported problem needs two independent publishers before we list it.
Recalls aren't listed here. A franchised dealer can tell you from the VIN whether a recall is open on a particular car.
Common questions
Is the Volkswagen Polo reliable?
We don't score reliability: no public source records breakdowns, warranty claims or repair costs across every model, so a single rating would be guesswork. What we hold for Volkswagen Polo cars built from 2012: 0 problems Volkswagen has acknowledged, through a warranty extension, goodwill scheme or service action, and 4 reported by at least two independent publishers — listed above by generation, each with its sources. Which matter depends on the generation and engine, and on whether the work has been done, which a service history check shows.
What are the most common Volkswagen Polo problems?
For cars built from 2012, the problems at least two independent publishers report include: 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200): judder, clutch wear, mechatronic; TDI diesels: blocked DPF and EGR valve on short-trip cars; Front brake discs and tyres can wear quickly; 1.2 and 1.4 TSI (chain engines): timing chain stretch and rattle. Which apply depends on the generation and engine — they are listed generation by generation above, each with its sources.
Has Volkswagen acknowledged problems with the Polo?
We haven't found a warranty extension, goodwill scheme or service action in which Volkswagen acknowledged a problem on this model. The reported problems above come from the motoring press.
Does every Polo have these problems?
No. These describe the model; many cars never have them, and a well-maintained car is less likely to. Whether a known problem was fixed is what a service history shows: our check returns the manufacturer's dealer records by VIN, and there's no charge if we find nothing.
Has this car had the work done?
A known problem matters far less on a car whose dealer records show it was fixed. A service history check returns the manufacturer's own dealership records for a specific car, found by its VIN — what was done, when and at what mileage — and there's no charge if we find nothing.
